Scenarios

Choosing a Side

The side you choose gives you access to its hand of cards.
Germans Entente
To better facilitate hand security for live and PBEM play, a Solitaire player side has been omitted. See the module page at the VASSAL site for instructions on how to add one.

Card Play

Your hand is locked to you--the other player cannot access it. For live or PBEM play, use the Cards Held window to track the number of cards in each player hand. Use the button in the main toolbar to deal cards via the menu (one person can do this at the start of each turn for both players).

All cards may be right-clicked and played to: Play as Event (Ctrl-E), Play as Ersatz (Ctrl-Z), or Discard (Ctrl-D). Cards can be dragged to the Discard pile if desired, but no message will be generated. To retrieve a specific card from the Discard Pile, right-click the pile and choose "Draw Specific Cards".

Historical cards: Each side's choices for Historical starting cards are placed in the Discard pile initially. Take both into your hand, then return the unchosen card to the Draw pile manually. If not using the Historical cards option, shuffle these cards back into the deck before dealing cards.

Forces

Units for each side are on the Force Pool map window. Infantry units can be right-clicked and entrenched. Eliminating a unit sends it to its stack in the force pool.

Entrenching an army on the main map will automatically entrench any infantry units in its Army Template. Units moved between armies on the Army Templates display will trigger a message without identifying the unit or origin/destination armies.

Reinforcements are placed on the main map to the side of the Season track next to their turn of entry.

Forts

Forts on the map cannot be moved, and draw beneath armies and units. Use the left arrow key to reduce a fort's strength. When destroyed, forts are placed on the Force Pool display.

Army Templates

Each side's Army Templates are visible to the opponent. Use the toolbar buttons to hide army contents from your opponent and reveal them on a per-army basis. Units in an army may also be selected manually and revealed by right-click action. When invisible to the opponent, your units will display as semi-transparent to you.

Movement Indicators

The choice of whether or not to display movement of units is set to follow the player's preference--use the Mark Moved Pieces tickbox in File -> Preferences. Movement trails default to off, but can be enabled for units via the right-click Movement submenu.

Area Control

Every map area's name can be clicked to toggle between Friendly, Disputed, and Enemy status overlays.

Bidding for Initiative

If using optional rule 13.2 to bid for initiative, use the "Bid for Initiative" main toolbar button to access the Notes feature. Each side should record a Delayed note, ideally using the name of the current turn as the title of the note. Then both players can reveal their notes simultaneously to compare bids.

Historical Variants and Battle Plans

This game contains a far greater variety of initial setups and optional rules than can feasibly be accommodated as predefined setups. Consult the Theatre Rulebook and move, adjust, replace pieces on the map or in armies as needed to play with your preferred set of options.
