Battles Summary
[p35] There are 4 types of battles: Campaign (Ops), Conspiracy, Peasant Revolt, and Religious War (crusade, jihad,
reformation.) A Vote (Ops) is a political battle. See below.
All successes result in a regime change.
How Battles Work: Each attacking token kills one defending token but is itself killed in exchange.
The attacking player chooses all casualties.
The attacking empire is victorious if it has at least one survivor.
Bishops never fight; cubes fight only in Peasant Revolts.
Surviving agents and repressed tokens who participated as attackers must transfer to the conquered map card.
You may emancipate (see regime change) any remaining repressed tokens on the defeated empire.
If there is not enough room, then excess pirates are killed, and all others are repressed.
This is a summary of the battle table you will find in the rules. See the specific tab for more information on a topic.
-
A Campaign occurs when you do eastern or western Ops on a king. You must pay 1 florin for each attacking knight.
The king attacks an adjacent empire, diagonal included. Ignore token color.
Attackers: Knights in the king's empire. They all must participate.
Defenders: Knights/rooks in the defending empire.
If successful, the defending empire becomes a vassal, and there is a regime change.
- A Conspiracy is a one-shot.
Attackers: Knight/rook agents on your played card, bordering pirates, and repressed knights/rooks.
Defenders: Knights/rooks in the defending empire.
Ignore token color. If successful, there is a regime change. You may flip over the map card if it shows a theocracy.
- A Peasant Revolt is a one-shot.
Attackers: Knight/rook/cube agents on your played card, bordering pirates, your bordering concessions,
and repressed cubes.
Defenders: Knights/rooks in the defending empire.
Ignore token color except for your bordering concessions. If successful, there is a regime change.
- A Religious War is a one-shot. All attackers are the same color. All defenders are the two opposing colors.
There must be at least one defender of an opposing color.
Attackers: (All matching colors.) Knight/rook agents on your played card, knights/rooks in the empire,
knights in adjacent empires, and bordering pirates.
Defenders: (All opposing colors.) Knights/rooks in the empire and bordering pirates.
If successful, there is a regime change. Flip over the map card to the winning theocrary if it is not already on that side.
- Vote. You must have more concessions than anyone else on the target empire.
The empire must be owned and not a vassal. Pay 1 florin for every repressed unit in the empire.
There are no deaths. There is a regime change. Success against your own empire creates a republic.
