Notes on the Vassal Module for People's War Games' Korsun Pocket The module adds hex numbers to the map. Division of the numbering into quadrants A, B, C, and D is based on the boundaries of the module's four map sections, not the original mapsheets, which have some overlap. Pre-defined setups are available for all scenarios. I have applied required step losses per the guidelines in the rules. In those cases where the losses tipped over to the point where options were available, I have included a marker indicating how many additional steps should be removed. The reinforcement tracks for Scenarios 2, 3, and 8 include a stack of Soviet units marked with a question mark. These are called for as reinforcements in the scenario instructions but not listed in the master reinforcement schedule. Do with them as you like. The module adds the following units to the counter mix: * German 72nd Div. engineer and AT battalions - Mentioned in the errata. * Soviet 34Bd/2UF AT Brig. - Mentioned in the errata. * Soviet 27/2UF Engineer Bn. - Mentioned in the errata. * Soviet 25/27A Engineer Bn. - In setup instructions, but not in counter mix. Not mentioned in the errata, so deployed with a question mark. * Soviet 14/40A Engineer Bn. - In setup instructions, but not in counter mix. Not mentioned in the errata, so deployed with a question mark. * SS-specific company breakdown counters. * Mech and PG counters reflecting the Tank/Anti-Tank Support fix described in the errata. They are on their own tab in the Pieces menu. Pre-defined scenarios setups do not use them, so you will need to substitute them if you like (but there aren't very many). COMMAND MENUS The following items appear in any or all unit command menus: * Send to Dead Pile (Ctrl-S) - Move the unit to the dead pile on the German or Soviet play aids window. (You might need to scroll down to see that part of the Soviet play aids.) * Mask (Ctrl-M) - Mask the counter so that its identity and strength will not be known to the enemy player (if you want to adhere strictly to the reconnaissance rules in the original game). For details on masking, see http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Mask. * Flip (Ctrl-F) - Flip the piece to its reverse side (usually reflecting a formation change for artillery or a step loss for other units). * Delete (Ctrl-X) - Delete the piece. * Movement Trail (Ctrl-T) - Toggle the movement trail off or on. * Place Emplacing Marker (Soviet only) (Ctrl-E) - Place a Soviet Emplacing marker on top of the stack the unit is in. * Add U Level (Ctrl-U) - Increase the unsupplied level (cycles through 1, 2, 3, and none). * Column (Ctrl-C) - Display an appropriate column symbol on the unit. Select again to remove. (Alternatively, you can use separate markers, as in the original game.) * Place Digging In Marker (non-arty only) (Ctrl-D) - Place a side-specific Digging In marker on top of the stack the unit is in. * Place Fortifying Marker (engineers and constructio troops only) (Ctrl-D) - Place a side-specific Fortifying marker on top of the stack the unit is in. TOOLBAR The toolbar includes the following non-standard buttons: * Reinforcements - The reinforcement track from the original game, reformatted to fit better on the screen. * Day - To record the current day. * Time - To record the current time. * Temp - To record current temperature. * Atmos - To record current atmospheric conditions. * Visibility - To record current visibility. * Ground - To record current ground conditions. * Charts - All charts from the original game grouped onto six tabs. * German Play Aids - A window with the following features: * The original air chart. * An added air commitment chart. * An added logistics chart to keep track of supply and ammo points (click on the arrows beside a number to adjust its value). * The dead pile. * A space to park battalions that have been broken down into companies. * Soviet Play Aids - Similar to the German Play Aids window, but without the breakdown area. Scroll down if you don't see everything. * Overview - A reduced view of the entire map. Click again to close it. * Line of Sight - Click on the button to activate the Vassal LoS feature. Then, left-click on the firing unit and drag to the target. The line of sight will appear as a red line, and the range will display above the target hex. Click anywhere on the map to turn off LoS. * Delete Trails - Delete all of the movement trails on the map. MARKERS * Airfield - Added, per the suggestion in the rules. * Ammo - As in the original game, except that there is a single marker whose value can be changed by pressing Ctrl-Up or Ctrl-Down (maximum value of 20). * Artillery Column (German) - As in the original game (as an alternative, select a unit and press Ctrl-C to apply the symbol directly to a its counter). * Artillery Column (Soviet) - " " " * Bridge Repaired - As in the original game. Can be rotated. * New Depot (German) - Added, per the suggestion in the rules. * New Depot (Soviet) - " " " * Pontoon - As in the original game. Can be rotated. * Supply Unit Status - As in the original game. * Turn - Added. * Blank Blue, Blank Green, and Blank Yellow - Added, to use as you please. Unsupplied levels are built into the counters rather than being on separate markers. Note that markers are cloned with Ctrl-Shift-C instead of Ctrl-C in order to avoid crosstalk with the Column command for units. The module also includes (on their own tab) markers to record the weather history on the reinforcment track if you are using variable weather.
