Here are some tips on playing the game:
-
You can play an adventure by selecting "File>Adventures>Standard Adventures" and choosing one of the 10 standard adventures that come
with the game. Or you can select "File>Adventures>New Setup" for a blank board and create your own adventure. For more tips on this, see "Creating Your Own Adventures" below.
- Press the "Notes" button to read the scenario description and rules.
- To activate units, right-click on them and select "Order Unit". They will outline in red.
- To move a unit, simple drag it from one hex with your mouse pointer and drop it in another. To generate accurate movement trails, all units must be moved one hex at a time.
- A "No battle" marker has been provided, available from each unit via the right-click menu. They may be placed on units whose movement prevents them from battling.
- To battle, indicate the battling unit by right-clicking on the battling unit and selecting the Attacker Marker (a yellow fist). Indicate the target unit by selecting the Target Marker (a red fist). Roll the appropriate number of battle dice by pressing a button on the control panel. Your opponent should take hits (by selecting Take Hit from the right-click menu) and retreating his unit as appropriate.
When one battle is finished, you can right-click the Attacker Marker and select "Battled", which will change the Attacker Marker into a grayed-out image to indicate the unit has finished its battling for the turn. The Target Marker can be moved (by drag and drop) to a new target unit.
- When a unit is destroyed, the owning player should place it onto the victory banner track of his opponent. The tracks will often have unneeded spaces "whited out" to show how many banners are needed for victory, if it is less than the 7 printed on the board.
- Blazon markers are provided to mark objectives on the map which provide victory banners. They can be dragged and dropped onto the victory track when appropriate.
- The side whose units use the pennant banners is played by Player 1 and the side with the standard banners is played by Player 2. Both player's have private windows that only they can open to hold their Command and Lore cards. They are opened with the buttons labeled "P1 Cards" and "P2 Cards" on the control panel. A button labeled "Cards" will open a window that shows an inventory of the total cards held by both players.
Command and Lore cards should be placed on the board, where the opposing player can read them. They can be magnified with the mouse-over zoom function to be more easily read. After reading the card, the opposing player can put the card on the appropriate discard pile (each deck has a discard pile just to the right of it).
- Lore Pools: Each player has a Lore Cup token on his board edge. To add Lore to your cup, right-click and select "Take Lore". To place Lore back into the common pool, select "Spend Lore". The common Lore Pool between the card decks should automatically update it's total Lore as this is done. Should a problem occur, the common Lore Pool can be added to or subtracted from via it's own right-click menu.
- War Councils: Each player has a War Council window ("P1 WC" and "P2 WC") where they can set up war council tokens. The window had a button at the top which allows you to flip all the tokens in the window over or up at once. You can place token, mask them from the other player by flipping them over, set the levels, then both players can reveal their tokens simultaneously. Both windows are available for all players (or observers) to open and look at. These windows can be zoomed up, using the zoom buttons at the top of the window, should you need to read the print on the War Council sheets.
- Lore Decks: The Lore Decks are contained in a window available from the control panel. You can right-click the decks to select multiple cards with one draw to put them in the Lore Draw Deck on the main board.
- The Charts button contains all the reference cards for the game. There is a Line of Sight thread (LOS button) that gives range in hexes as well as showing a proper line of sight.
- After a player finishes his turn, he may delete all the combat markers on the board by hitting the "Clear" button on the control panel and then delete all of the units' movement trails by hitting the "mov" button.
- Creature Tokens: You can find tokens for the Creature special effects in the "Pieces>Markers" window. The Poison token can be changed into a Web token or Eye token type via its right-click menu. The Lore token next to it can be used to stack with a Creature to indicate stored Lore. The Lore total is changed in the same manner as the Lore pool tokens.
Creating Your Own Adventures
- To set up your own adventures, go to "Files>Adventures>New Setup". Log on as an observer to avoid assigning yourself as one of the players on the saved game.
- Terrain Tiles are in the "Pieces>Terrain" window. All water terrain exists as layers on the one river piece. Right-click and select "Change Type" to get other river hex types. The bridge token changes to a ford token in the same fashion. The Landmarks are likewise all contained in a single piece, which has the Cleric's Healing Pool as its starting image. Once placed on the board, terrain pieces must be selected by Shift+Left-Click to move them or Shift+Right-Click to change them. Terrain hexes can be cloned via the right-click menu.
- The "Pieces>Markers" window has the War Council tokens, which you can drag and drop onto the War Council sheets in the player WC windows. The one token has all the War Council images in one piece, available via the right-click menu.
A blazon token and a small Lore Master token are also in this window for use when appropriate. They contain all the images in one piece, as noted above. The 'white-out' marker that is used to cover unneeded victory banner spaces is below the War Council token (being white on a white background, it is invisible unless you know it's there). Both shapes are contained in the one piece.
- Units can be dragged and dropped from the "Unit" window to the board. Units can be cloned via the right-click menu, however, if you do so, the newly created unit will stack on top of the old one. You will have to double-click the stack to separate the pieces and then you can drag the new piece to a different location.
