EDOL Card Rulings & Clarifications and Gameplay Format

These rulings are meant to clarify the play of cards for EDOL tournament play. These rulings are official and binding in all EDOL organized events, unless the specific rules for the event oppose a ruling listed here. Disputes involving these cards should not be directed to the Jedi Council unless this information does not resolve the dispute.

General Rulings

While not explicit in the rulebook, these rules are reasonable extrapolations of the rulebook or are rules that apply to online play of Epic Duels. All players are expected to know and abide by these rules as part of EDOL participation.

  1. All characters block line of sight - even allied characters, except in the case of a card that specifically allows you to do so. (No such cards exist in the Hasbro decks.)
  2. You cannot use a basic combat or power combat card to attack your own characters under any circumstances, except in the case of a card that specifically allows you to do so. (No such cards exist in the Hasbro decks.)
  3. Special cards that ask you to specify "any target" may target "any" character, including allies. For example, Choke can target Vader's Stormtroopers, and Anakin's Wrath can target Padme.
  4. Cards that specify any target the character "can attack" can only target enemies. Cards that effect adjacent characters (or characters adjacent to the target) can damage allies. For example, Thermal Detonator cannot target your own or allied characters, but if an ally is adjacent to the target, they are still damaged.
  5. Pursuant to Hasbro's ruling that your turn may not end with a non-action card, you may only play a non-action card if you have at least one standard action remaining. Thus if you have used your two actions, or lost one or both as a result of an opponent's card and have none remaining, you may not play a card that "does not count as an action", except in the case of a card that specifically allows you to do so. (No such cards exist in the Hasbro decks.)
  6. Players should not reshuffle their discard pile until they attempt to draw a card and there are no cards to draw.
  7. On your turn, you must take two actions, if you are able. Players are on their honor to follow this rule. If in reviewing a logfile it is discovered that a player has passed on actions when he/she was able to take an action, this will constitute cheating.
  8. When playing a card that allows you to randomly draw from an opponent's hand, do not draw those cards until prompted to do so by the player whose hand you are drawing from. Since there is no easy way to randomly select a card from an ED hand in VASSAL, when playing such a card you must give your opponent a chance to rearrange his or her hand before selecting your random discard(s).

Card Rulings

Anakin Skywalker Boba Fett Count Dooku
Darth Maul Darth Vader Emperor Palpatine
Han Solo Jango Fett Luke Skywalker
Mace Windu Obi-Wan Kenobi Yoda

Boba Fett

Thermal Detonator
This card may not target allied characters; however, if any of your characters are adjacent to the target, they take damage as normal.

Wrist Cable
1)This card may not target allied characters.
2)Playing two of these in a row effectively shuts down any actions an opponent would otherwise have, thus it would not be possible for an opponent to play a card that "does not count as an action" after being the target of two Wrist Cable cards in one turn.

Jango Fett

Flame Thrower
This card does damage to all adjacent characters, friendly or opposed.

Sniper Shot
To be consistent with the Hasbro ruling on All Too Easy: if any defense card is played, regardless of the amount of damage blocked, the attack value is considered to be 3 rather than 6.

Wrist Cable
1)This card may not target allied characters.
2)Playing two of these in a row effectively shuts down any actions an opponent would otherwise have, thus it would not be possible for an opponent to play a card that "does not count as an action" after being the target of two Wrist Cable cards in one turn.

Darth Maul

Blinding Surge
1) If the damage Maul receives kills him, then the damage of Blinding Surge is not dealt to the attacker. Maul is loses if the attack is enough to kill Maul, even if the damage from Blinding Surge would have been enough to kill the opponent.
2) Even though the defense value of this card is zero, playing this card is still considered to block an attack for the purpose of cards that modify attack values or have other secondary effects if unblocked, such as All Too Easy.

Darth Vader

All Too Easy
We are using the Hasbro ruling for this card. This means that if any defense card is played, regardless of the amount of damage blocked, the attack value is considered to be 3 rather than 20.

Dark Side Drain
Vader cannot use this card to attack allies.

Emperor Palpatine

Meditation
After Meditation is played, your opponent may not draw a card as a result of any actions taken on his or her next turn. So, for example, Count Dooku's Taunting would not trigger a card draw, but the card could still be played as a straight A7.

Luke Skywalker

I Will Not Fight You
1) Special cards such as Thermal Detonator are not discarded as a result of I Will Not Fight You.
2) Basic combat cards belonging to a deceased minor must still be discarded if their attack value is higher than 1.

Mace Windu

Battlemind
Battlemind in hand is considered to not have an attack or defense value until played. Thus Battlemind is not discarded as a result of I Will Not Fight You (and similar custom cards).

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Force Control
Movement with this card is subject to normal movement rules; you cannot move a character through a space occupied by an opposing character.

Yoda

Force Lift
1) The player controlling a lifted character may discard the 3 cards to stand the character up at any moment, including after an attack has been declared, but before damage is dealt, thus giving the lifted character a chance to play a defense card.
2) The player controlling a lifted character can not move that character, even via special or power combat cards. If the player controlling the lifted character plays card a that would move the lifted character, the movement portion of the card is ignored for that character. However, a lifted character can still be moved by other players and as such is still a valid target of opponent's special cards like Force Push or similar cards (such as Flamethrower or It's Not Wise).

Force Rebound
When this card is played against All Too Easy, Sniper Shot (or similar custom cards) the base value, not the value listed in the secondary text, is rebounded back to the attacker.

Dueling Format

Characters and maps are to be generated randomly. All players must use the Random Character deck in the Decks window in VASSAL to randomly select a character, and the card draw must be included in the logfile to document random selection. If the Random Character deck yields a deck other than the 12 Hasbro decks, continue drawing until you draw a Hasbro deck. Sometimes special tournaments will feature one or more additional community-created maps or decks. If so, a folder will be created in the Files area to store the VASSAL extension(s) necessary for the tournament. Installation of these extensions will be required for tournament participation.

Each duel consists of two matches. After each player draws a character, players roll the die to determine setup order. A higher number beats a lower number, but a purple number beats a green number of the same value; i.e. a green 5 beats a purple 4, but a purple 4 beats a green 4. The high roller decides either to place first, or to take the first turn. The first player to place chooses any square along the farthest left or right vertical column for the major character (ignoring the assigned spaces printed on the map) and places minor characters adjacent to the major character. The other player does the same on the opposite side of the board. Then the first match is played. Players then switch characters and play another match. The roll for placement/first turn from the first match will remain in place for the swapped match, that is, whichever character won the roll-off for first placement in the first match will retain the advantage in the swapped match.

Winning and Drawing

A Win can occur in one of two ways:

    1. When you defeat your opponent’s major character, regardless of the minor character.
    2. When one player voluntarily forfeits to another. The forfiet must be documented in a logfile.

A Draw for a single match will occur under one of the following conditions:

    1. Both players agree to a draw.
    2. One player cycles his deck twice without either player winning; this is a change from the official Hasbro rules, which would simply award victory to the player who “has the least amount of damage.”
    3. The play of a single card eliminates both major characters. E.g., Boba Fett has 2 HP and is adjacent to Mace Windu, with 3 HP. Boba plays Thermal Detonator on Mace Windu. The result kills both characters, and ends the match in a draw.
