Pax Pamir 2nd edition

By default, Vassal opens new modules with a combined application window. In order to efficiently use screen space, I suggest opening File > Preferences, unchecking "Use combined application window (requires restart)", and restarting the module. Changing JVM maximum heap settings to 1024 Mb is probably a good idea too.

Upon starting, you are asked to choose a player side.

This button will undo your previous action.

This button is used to step through log files used in play-by-email games.

This button opens a server control window for online games.

This button allows you to leave the game to free up your seat for another player.

This button opens the following small window:

Clicking any one of the 2-5 player setup buttons will set up the game for the selected number of players, and close this window. Please note that there may be a significant delay between clicking and the setup being completed.

The red, blue, black, tan, and grey buttons open player windows.

This button opens the Wakhan window.

This button shows the player aid.

This button opens a list of all cards in opponents' Courts and Hands.

This button opens a list of all cards that have not been dealt to the Market.

This button opens a window that allows for note taking.

The main map

This button takes a screenshot of the window.

This button zooms in.

This button allows selection of zoom (default is 16%, mouseover zoom is 75%).

This button zooms out.

This button removes all blocks from the board after a successful Dominance Check.

This button discards all events in play (in the "events in effect" area or a player window) after a Dominance Check.

This button executes step four of cleanup as described in the rules. Please note that there may be a significant delay between clicking and the market refresh being completed.

This button reports that your turn is over, for the purpose of informing other players. The module does not track whose turn it is.

The main map is divided into several areas. The market board, deck, discard, map, coalition blocks, and bank are as described in the rules.

The "events in effect" area is for events that have an ongoing effect and aren't being held on a player window.

The "seating arrangement" area indicates, after setup, the player order and first player.

The coalition blocks switch between army and road depending on where they are placed. Right-clicking a block and selecting Return removes it from the board.

The region symbols on the map can be right-clicked to place a tribe from a selected player's board.

Rule is automatically calculated and indicated by coloured ruler tokens. No rule is indicated by the absence of a ruler token. This replaces the method for indicating rule described in the rules, and the module does not feature moveable ruler tokens.

Right-clicking a rupee allows selection of Take, to send it to your window, or Return, to send it to the Bank.

Player windows

The player windows are the only places in the module where cards and rupees will form stacks if placed or sent to the same location. Cards/rupees in a stack have a slight vertical offset, and move together. To unstack and splay cards/rupees, double-click the stack then select, drag, and drop individual cards/rupees.

The colour of adjacent courts is indicated to the left and right of the player board.

Right-click a loyalty dial to select loyalty. Changing loyalty will discard prizes and return gift tokens. Before the first loyalty selection, "Wakhan" can be selected. Doing so replaces the dial with a three-colour Wakhan dial that invisibly follows pragmatic loyalty calculated from Wakhan cards and player loyalty.

Wakhan window

The Wakhan window has two decks. The left deck is shuffled during setup, and cards can be dragged from the left deck to the right. Right-clicking the right deck and selecting Return sends all the cards back to the left deck. Right-clicking the left deck allows reshuffling.

Cards

Court cards generate impact reports when moved from Hand or Market to Court, and will change the favoured suit if appropriate.

Right-clicking cards provides a variety of context-sensitive options:

All cards can be flipped over.

All cards can be discarded.

Nearly all cards in the market can be purchased, which sends the card to your hand, to the discard, or to the "events in effect" area.

Three cards, Rebuke, Rumor, and Pashtunwali Values, ask on purchase that you make a selection of region, player, or suit.

Rumor and Pashtunwali Values display an indication of the player or suit selected as a reminder of the selection made, events that only benefit the purchasing player are marked by that player's colour as a reminder, and all events sent to the "events in effect" area indicate whether they were purchased or discarded.

Pashtunwali Values in the "events in effect" area suppresses further movement of the suit marker until discarded.

Rebuke and riot effects clear the named region of tribes and armies.

Court cards in a court allow you to place a spy from a selected player on the card.

Court cards in a court with an action icon allows generation of a report of the action for the benefit of other players. This has no other effect.

Court cards in a court that have a prize symbol can be taken as a prize. This rotates the card 180 degrees and places it under your loyalty dial, stacking with any matching prizes already present. If the prize does not match your current loyalty, your loyalty will be switched, discarding previous prizes and returning gift tokens. Discarding a prize will rotate the card back.
