Campaigns of King David
Thanks for trying out my first VASSAL module, and thanks to the fine gents at Clash of Arms Games for allowing me to use their game.
I'll attempt to explain some things about this module that may not be typical.
One of my main goals in creating this module was to make the food and resource calculation a lot easier. Instead of having the players scan the whole board, adding up individual areas' F/R values, I desired a button that can do the work automatically. To make this work, the users will have to adhere to the following practices.
- Be diligent about marking ownership of areas. This includes marking ownership of home areas, even though this isn't required when playing a physical copy of the game. Ownership is changed by right-clicking on the food/resource circles within an area, and selecting the new owner.
- Remove ownership markers in areas under siege. Neither player (attacker/defender) should be benefiting from harvest or resource production in areas under siege.
- The event chits that increase/decrease production (e.g. "Increase Harvest") for a country have an additional menu item. After playing one of these event chits to the main board, select the target country, and the next food/resource production calculation will include the effects of this chit.
- The Production button in the toolbar calculates the production of food and resources for each country, and displays the results in the "Food/Resource" map window. The actual food and resource markers will still need to be manually adjusted on this map.
- Clicking the Production button generates the production values, and then resets the effects of any previously played event chits that adjust food/resource production. You may play as many of these event chits as you want before clicking Production, and their effects will "stack", but once you click the button, the chits are a distant memory and further Production clicks will be back to normal.
- VASSAL currently has no ability to work with fractional values -- only integers -- so the hill areas in Negev are currently treated as producing 0 food. You'll have to manually add whatever few more food ticks you deserve for these meager hills until I come up with a work-around.
- Since there's no intrinsic place on the map to put control markers for empty (non-producing) areas, such as a majority of Egypt and Bedouin countries, I left them without control markers. Let me know if markers are really needed and I'll figure out how to do that.
I hope you enjoy playing Campaigns of King David using this VASSAL module. I had fun making it! Let me know at engdy@bgg if you have suggestions for improving this module.
